This concept of fearing the Lord has been manipulated by many to mean something God never intended. We do not fear God as one would fear an abusive Father. The fear that God speaks of is a healthy fear that drives us to holy living and proper reverence to the King of Kings! God is perfect in every way, and when we develop a healthy fear of the Lord we are far more likely to live a life of purity before Him!
