Being Poor in Spirit

Overcoming Hindrances to Healthy Spiritual Mourning

The first step in experiencing a personal revival is realizing the need to be revived in the first place. Psalm 139:23-24 (NASB) says, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my anxious thoughts; and see if there be any hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.” This explains why the Beatitudes start with mourning and poverty of spirit. We often fail to realize our need for revival because we compare ourselves with other people instead of Christ. But what if instead you examined your life from God’s point of view with Christ as your ultimate standard. This would be in direst obedience to Galatians 6:4 (NIV) which says, “Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else.”
