Our natural instinct as followers of Christ is to try and earn favor with God. This mentality is derived from the old covenant where the people of God lived under bondage to the Law. But we no longer need to live like that! We are a new creation in Christ (2 Cor. 5:17) and we have been set free from the bondage of the law so that we can now serve God in newness of the Spirit (Rom. 7:6).
