What Spiritual Practices the Early Church Was Devoted To
Acts 2:42
6 minutes | December 17, 2020
The Apostles Teachings. Fellowship. Breaking of Bread. Prayer. These were not merely additional activities that the church partook in occasionally. These were the very activities that the early church bestowed a majority of their energy in. In my opinion, it was in part because of their devotion to these activities that the Holy Spirit moved in such a powerful way leading to a revival that swept through the area. The question we must ask now as members of the 21st century church is, “Are we devoted to these same spiritual practices?” The question can’t be ... do we occasionally partake in these things for that is not how Luke describes the efforts of the early church in regards to these matters.
Are these four activities a central part of our spiritual life and our Christian gatherings? Are we giving constant attention to these areas and engaging in them with intense effort? Could part of the reason we see a lethargic and mediocre spirit in much of the western church be that we have replaced the essential elements of the Christian life with more modern and practical activities? What would happen if the church decided to give up all of our programs and polished services and decided to steadfastly pursue studying God’s word, prayer, deeply connecting with each other, and sharing in the Lord’s Supper together? My belief is that revival would surely follow.
